The age of “CLUBS”

(I know cricket and football well, so I am using these sports as examples)

After the start of IPL, club cricket is becoming popular. Club football is more popular than football played between countries. In cricket, it’s exactly the opposite. Every aspiring cricketer’s aim will be to represent his nation where as in football; representing Real Madrid or Barcelona etc… will be their dream.

Let me start from the basic. A kid who wishes to play football joins a club’s academy. Thereby he will pursue his career there only. The competition is open he gets a chance to the main team of the club if he performs well. Else he will move on to another club looking for a chance to play.

If he wishes to play cricket, he joins an academy (not club) for training. First he has to play in zonal level then state level n finally national. The selection process is carried out by state n national cricket board members. In all these, he doesn’t represent any club. He has to perform very well to get into the national side.

Cricket unites the nation!

Even if club cricket is emerging, international cricket has not lost its charm. Number of international matches is much more than these “leagues”. People don’t hate anyone in other teams when they represent the nation. He gets the support from everyone irrespective of the club he represents.

It’s the reverse in football. In an international match, if there is any sport in which you see club flags a lot, it must be football! You see more of club matches, so you will become diehard fans of them. Spain and England are classic examples. There are many in England who hates Rooney, Terry etc... because of the club rivalries. Many Real Madrid players don’t like Barca players (Even if they represent Spain) and vice versa (If they had good chemistry, Spain and England would have won many worldcups by now). Same applies for almost all top clubs in different countries. Only time when football unites the nation is during the Worldcup which happens once in 4 years.

Yes, club system gives a lot of opportunities for the youngsters to perform. But huge money paid to them may demotivate them from playing for the nation (if schedules clash). In fact, many cricketers retired from international cricket to play in IPL. In football, even if players are interested, clubs won’t release them to play an international game. Do we really want to see this?

Final verdict: clubs are not bigger than the nation.

  1. ya wat u said abt club football is true tat country mates turn out to b foes wit club rivalry. but ther r many instances wer players r developed and country gets recognised (in footballing world) like Zlatan,Forlan,Eto'o,Kanu,Park. And many get international chances in SO YOUNG age due to it Messi, Wilshere, Rafael, Pedro, Hernandez, etc. the present situation is tat club football is very much required for future of a country's. even in IPL players got recognised (pandey, uttappa, marsh) and few got chances ODI's (Ojha, R.Sharma,watson,y.pathan) and few career got screwed. Cricket is not completely in clubs cos domestic cricket rules in every country. But football is completely into clubs. And its the fans who created the rivalries(football)! Players do meet for WC's Euro's Olympics' qualifiers of each of the events; injuries and deciding whether international duties or important clashes (rarely) separate them. i think cricket and football ve different approach to the game, so i strongly believe football needs club(cos its into the black hole).
CRICKET IS NOT YET INTO IT.
CLUBS IS REQUIRED FOR PLAYERS DEVELOPMENT! YOU CANT COME TO CONCLUSION ABT FOOTBALL'S CLUB WITH CRICKET APPROACH TO THE GAME

  2. I agree that club system identifies the talented youngsters. Yep, countries have got recognized of players!
Football clubs are well established. Football as a sport works in a way. It would be bad to change the system now.
(btw, EURO - only for european nations. Olympics - check the rules regarding the team composition once :P
Now as club cricket is becoming popular, we need to think about its use)
In cricket, youngsters get a chance mainly coz of performance in Domestic, especially Ranji trophy. Sachin played at a very young age even without any club.
The model adapted in cricket is different and its kinda unique, lets not spoil it.
IPL stars didn't perform in international stage. Best example would be ravindra jadeja.
I agree we should not compare cricket and football. But i used them to explain "clubs"

  3. like EURO there are still Copa America,Asian Cup. Every all footballing countries take part in one or the other. So there a chance to represnt there country.
Even i am with Domestic cricket, club cricket is not proper cos
    1.No players consent.
2.Money spent on players is not according to the talent.
3.No feelings in players of representing their region.
i think rules are not formed properly. It has become too much dealings of money.

  4. Firstly comparing IPL clubs and football clubs is like comparing chamakh and rooney respectively . Rooney is older and tested. Chamakh is good, but younger and requires a lot of tuning. We all saw the world cup. The winning team mainly comprised of two clubs which can be regarded as the greatest rivalry in the history of club football. Yet we saw the unmistakable team spirit. Months later they were at it again. Fighting like only rivals do. What does it show? It shows that the players are professionals. They play their heart out irrespective of club or nation. The fans too got behind their national teams during World cup. So club football is good and I totally agree with selvam.
